SAND TRAP (2016) - for flute and bassoon
Premiere: Second Species, Rice University Composers' Forum, Houston, TX, November 7th, 2016
Duration: ca. 9 min
Sand Trap takes influence from the spontaneous, jagged unison lines played by bebop horn section pairings – Cannonball Adderley and Miles Davis or Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker, for example – as well as the unison rhythms played by saxophone sections in big-bands. One can imagine a mini golf ball flying in the air spinning and bouncing on the turf after a putt, only to bounce to a halt into a sand trap, then to be smacked out with and land right in the hole for a stroke well over par.
