Winter 2018 in Oslo, Norway: Part 2

After my Northern Lights trip to Tromsø, I started working on an arrangement of Edvard for a smaller instrumentation, along with found samples and video. Ideas have been brewing for this piece since its premiere. One particular element that I’m interested in notating in the piece is an uneven three-beat typically found in some Norwegian folk music. In my future writing, I plan to incorporate this feeling of “groove," i.e. music that doesn’t just groove in a totally metronomically, even-pulse style (syncopations against a 4/4 or compound grid). Groove to me is cyclical and pulse-oriented, but it becomes interesting when the subdivisions, or the pulses themselves, are somewhat uneven. This is
